How Gym Cliques Has Affected My Mental Health
A few months ago, I went to a gym with my boyfriend and was really excited about the prospect of losing weight. The environment was quite posh and I was really comfortable as I was surrounded by pretty people who looked like they could take off my shirt. In reality, these so-called “gated communities” are a total waste of time in terms of what you get out of them. The atmosphere was more like a posh club than a place for exercise, and the fact that everyone seemed to know each other made it even more difficult for me to stay focused. After a few failed attempts at losing weight at this facility, I slowly started to dread the gym as something that was not productive or fun.

These issues started to eat away at me and my mental health. Over time, I began to isolate myself from friends and family and it was then that I really began to see how gym closed-minded people can affect your mental health. In addition to the fact that I was getting tired and sick of being around so-called “informals,” I also began to feel depressed and worthless. There is nothing in the world like having a supportive network of family and friends who care about you and your goals, but when those ties are pulled and people treat you like a member of the clique instead of your best friend, it can have a devastating effect on your mental health. I hated going to the gym and I hated the fact that I had to go there alone.
Thankfully, I realized that I needed to do something about this, and so I began to find other places to exercise and other clubs to join. Today, I am a happy, healthy person thanks to a close team of great people who love me no matter what. Despite all of the negativity surrounding gyms these days, it is true that they can be an excellent place to get a workout and meet new people. If you have ever been to the gym and were blown away by the intensity of the gym crowd, or if you have ever felt really down at yourself for not going despite how much you wanted to, I’m sure you will agree that gym cliques have affected your mental health.
