Whether you’re a contractor or a do-it-yourself homeowner, there’s no doubt that you’ll need a tape measure at one point or another. There are so many different uses for this versatile tool that even your basic multimeter will serve you well. Let’s take a look at how you can use a tape measure in SketchUp.

The T-square is a great tool for measuring small angles. You can use it both as a marking tool and for measuring straight angles. As you use any other tool in SketchUp, your measurements box will be waiting to accept an exact angle measurement.

Beyond those two tools, you can also use the following tricks with a tape measure tool in SketchUp. Use the ruler at the top of your view and align your measurements with the centerline of your model. Then draw a line across your measurements, just as you would with the rectangular lines you used in your measurements box. This will allow you to easily change the dimension when you have to. Also, be sure to not use the top dimension when drawing your measurements, since it may cause the view to appear incorrectly.

Use the same idea but instead of aligning the measurements with the centerline, draw a line between each pair of points. For example, if you want to measure from point A to point B, draw a line between the two points. You can use this as your starting point, or you may choose to start over at a point B. Use the ruler again to determine the exact distance between the points, then subtract it from your starting point. If the difference is greater than one inch, use negative numbers to subtract the measurement. However, you should only use negative numbers for measuring longer distances.

Once you get all the measurements you need, save all the data into a.CSV file, then open up your sketch program. Use the rulers again to determine the exact measurement, then enter the desired value. The program will then calculate the exact length. You can save this length in inches, centimeters, or feet and inches. This is how you can use your tape measure tool with SketchUp.

There are a couple of other ways how you can use the Tape measure tool with SketchUp. First, if you create a 3D object, you will probably want to align your measurements onto the edges of the object. You can use a pencil along the edge or you can use the shape tool to create guidelines for the exact measurement. The last way you can use the Tape measure tool with SketchUp is to simply draw a guideline so that you know where to cut the wire. This is useful when making large structures or when you want to get accurate measurements.
